Welcome to the all-day bar that doubles up as a gaming parlour! Welcome to The Parking Lot, Kolkata!
Launched in August 2018, this quirky, youthful place offers great dining and drinking experiences at affordable prices. The gaming zone is a cool way to unwind and has fast become a favourite with the younger crowd. Co-owned by Aditya Mehta of White Castle Hospitality, The Parking Lot is changing the way the city parties.
The Design Dynamics
The name of the bar was the driving force behind the design language of the space. “Although it is an enclosed space, we wanted to create the look and feel of an outdoor bar that is attached to a parking lot,” Sonia Bhattacharjee, Project Architect, Patch Design Studio, says.
As a result, every element had to be carefully planned and executed. The Patch Design Studio team wanted to achieve a perfect balance between a warm, indoor pub and a vibrant, outdoor space. This seamless vibe was brought to life through a continuous and conscious design process.
Since The Parking Lot was to be built around a specific theme, the design requirement was unlike any other bar or restaurant. “We had to ensure we did not go overboard with the underlying concept of an outdoor parking space. We also had to make a statement with our creativity. That was one of the main challenges of the project,” Bhattacharjee tells us.
The Play Station
True to its name, the all-day-bar functions pretty much like a parking lot. Once you enter, you have to share your contact number at the counter to receive an OTP. You need to share this OTP and get yourself registered. Next, you will receive a wristband, which has to be tapped at turnstiles for you to enter! You may now access the gaming stations, order food and beverages of your choice.
The design team had to ensure the bar attracted party peeps of every age group. Hence, they introduced design elements that a range of visitors could connect to and appreciate.
Designated Areas Of The Parking Lot
The reception area of The Parking Lot is designed as a garage, while the front wall sports a few hundred mini cars. The staircase connecting the ground floor to the main dining area on the upper floor is a perfect transition space. To create an outdoor vibe, one of the walls features a custom-designed concrete water fountain and a vertical garden. The other wall, cladded in yellow and black stripes, resembles a road.
The main dining and gaming zone is on the upper floor. The design team decided to make a lasting impression by adding hand-painted wall art. An entire wall is covered with a psychedelic artwork. The bar is cladded with rustic copper sheet and the backdrop is finished in horizontal burnt wooden strips.
What else makes the bar special you ask? Well, the aura changes according to the time of the day. During the day, it is more subtle, while at night the lighting and artwork add a rustic and grunge effect. “The challenge was to place a DJ booth that would resonate the bar’s personality. We used a van and added an illusion of it being only partially inside the bar,” Bhattacharjee says.
“The psychedelic wall art is in complete contrast to the otherwise minimal decor. It creates a vibrant, exciting ambience,” Mehta, the co-owner of The Parking Lot, tells us. He adds that the success of the bar has made him optimistic about expanding the brand to other cities. Mehta is already in talks with investors and hopes to bring the quirky bar to tier I cities such as Mumbai and Delhi.
